Powell jumped 29-4 1/2 (8.95m) in the IAAF World Championships on Aug. 30, 1991 in Tokyo, Japan to break the world record of 29-2 1/2 (8.90m) set by Bob Beamon in the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Powell has held this record longer than anyone in history, surpassing the great Jesse Owens who held the record for 25 years, from 1935-1960.
